Exercise

The physical health benefits of exercise are well known. Exercise is also an effective way to reduce stress, boost mood and enhance self-esteem. It can be an outlet to channel worries and frustrations, and an avenue for social support and connection.

When you’re feeling stressed or low, give exercise a go!

Here are some ideas to get you moving:

  • Go for a walk / run outside
  • Gardening
  • Take up a class - yoga, pilates, dance
  • Sign up to a running club
  • Dance around the house
  • Play a sport - tennis, soccer, basketball

Creative pursuits

Engaging in fun and creative pursuits can reduce stress. This may include writing, singing or painting. When we’re immersed in a creative activity, we often enter in a state of mindfulness. Engaging in creative pursuits can also offer a sense of accomplishment and is often an avenue for connection.

Journaling

Journaling is a powerful tool we can use to process thoughts and emotions. Writing provides an opportunity to distance oneself from their feelings. It can also serve as an outlet to channel frustrations and worries. Over time, you can observe patterns in behaviour, which may inspire behaviour change.

Connection to others

Facing harmful content online can feel lonely and difficult. Connecting with others provides us a sense of belonging, which is important for mental wellbeing. Connecting with others can help us through challenging times by offering us a source of emotional support. Research shows that connection with others is strongly linked to lower levels of depression and anxiety.

When you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed it can be helpful to practise some of the strategies outlined above. Regular practice of these strategies is important for supporting mental health and wellbeing.

How can you incorporate regular stress busting activities in your day?
