Parley in the Pub: Big Questions, Bold Conversations, and a Brilliant First Round

Last Thursday evening, the Museum of Sticks & Stones hosted our very first Parley in the Pub—a new, more conversational iteration of The Parley, our public debate series designed to uncover common ground on complex issues.

This time, we traded theatres for bar stools and took over the upstairs of Flying Colours, gathering a small but engaged group of friends, followers and curious minds to test the format.

The Parley has always been about bold, respectful conversations—intellectually engaging, culturally provocative, and never boring. This pilot was no exception.

Hosted in the style of a F*ck Up Night, we swapped out formal debators for participatory play. Attendees shared their thoughts and perspectives through a series of activities: from spectrum-based opinion mapping (“Brisbane Olympics: yes or no?”), to punchy, speed-dating-style rounds on everything from culture wars to condiments (yes, the Vegemite vs Nutella debate made an appearance).

The night was full of scintillating dialogue, spontaneous insights, and generous pours from our friends at Flying Colours. It was both social and cerebral—the kind of evening where minds are stretched and glasses are clinked in equal measure.

We’re pleased to report the experiment was a success. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with thoughtful suggestions, new ideas, and plenty of enthusiasm for what’s next.

If you'd like to be involved in future feedback sessions or attend upcoming events, the best way is to become a Curator:

Until then, we’ll be refining the format, gathering momentum—and preparing for an even bigger second round. We hope to see you there.
